"Love Builds Up" Special Offering

Wesley's "Year-End" Offering

Now through January 31, 2018 - $21,000 goal
“Knowledge puffs up, but LOVE BUILDS UP.” I Cor. 8:1b

Dear Wesley Family,

I am excited to share information with you regarding LOVE BUILDS UP: WESLEY’S
“END OF YEAR” SPECIAL OFFERING that begins now and continues through January, 2018.
This year, we have experienced God blessing us as we have been a blessing to
Macomb and the whole region. Through our weekly worship services, groups and classes,
community service and evangelistic outreach, we have pursued our vision “to be empowered
and nurtured in a growing community of faith, inviting, attracting and serving families and people
of all ages.”

Now, through our LOVE BUILDS UP. offering, we have the opportunity to make an even
greater impact for “the least, the lost, and the lonely” here in Macomb, in Illinois, and around the
world. Here is how your gifts will BUILD UP:

  • Build a home through a partnership with Habitat for Humanity.
  • Build our community through gifts to The Salvation Army, Loaves and Fishes, Samaritan’s Well.
  • Build Hope by supporting the “Our Conference, Our Kids” campaign to endow the spiritual life programs at The Baby Fold, Chaddock, Cunningham Children’s Home,
  • Leslie Bates Davis Neighborhood House, and Spero Family Services (formerly the United Methodist Children’s Home).
  • Build Faith by reaching out to our community with Easter outreach.
  • Build Lives devastated by hurricanes through the United Methodist Committee on Relief.
  • Use the special LOVE BUILDS UP. envelope for the offering, or make a gift online through the website - www.macombwesleyumc.com.

Making a difference together,

Howard White, Senior Minister

Special Offering Overview

Build a home

Our members are involved in the process of purchasing and donating a house at 710 North Edwards Street in Macomb to Habitat for Humanity. They will renovate and sell it to a deserving family. We’ve also contributed money for the renovation and are putting in hundreds of volunteer hours.

The volunteer labor and donated supplies along with a no-interest loan will make the monthly payments toward the purchase of the home manageable. We’re delighted by the opportunity this represents for a single dad and his three kids to live in, and eventually to own, a secure and comfortable home. All of the family’s payments on the house will then be used by Habitat to help additional families. It’s a win, win, win!

Build our Community

No one agency or ministry can respond to every need in a community. We are fortunate to
have a network of groups working to meet the most basic challenges confronting some of our
neighbors in Macomb and McDonough County. In the past, some of these agencies have been
the “Mission of the Month” in December. By including them in our end of year offering, we’ve
been able to give more support than ever. By giving to LOVE BUILDS UP, you’ll be making it
possible for Wesley to generously support The Salvation Army, Samaritan’s Well, and Loaves
and Fishes. (along with Habitat for Humanity).

Build Hope

The five child welfare agencies within the Illinois Great Rivers Conference of the United
Methodist Church provide for the whole child, and the whole family - body, soul and spirit. While
their basic needs for safety, food and shelter are provided, this work with children is not
complete if we do not offer healing through Christ. “Our Conference Our Kids” is a campaign to
endow the spiritual life programs at 5 United Methodist agencies, including The Baby Fold
(Normal), Chaddock (Quincy), Cunningham Children’s Home (Urbana), Leslie Bates Davis
Neighborhood House (East St. Louis), and Spero Family Services (formerly the United
Methodist Children’s Home in Mt. Vernon). When we offer pastoral care to children and families
we give them hope that is beyond their circumstances. The world tells these kids they don’t
have a prayer, but we will make sure they do.

Build Faith

Sitting in the pews at Wesley on Sunday Mornings, it’s easy to forget that most of our neighbors
in Macomb do not have A church home where they can worship God, and find support and hope
to cope with life’s challenges. Over the last few years, we’ve worked hard to send regular
invitations to the community to join us for worship. Since EASTER is the time of year when
unchurched people are most likely to attend a church for the first time, or say “yes” when
someone invites them to church, we have made a special focus on Easter Outreach.

Build Lives

Images continue to pour in from Puerto Rico and other areas devastated by this year’s
hurricanes. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is always one of the first agencies on the ground when disasters like this strike and they are always one of the last to leave. The world’s attention may move onto something new, but through UMCOR, Methodists stick around to help people rebuild their lives.

Why a Special Offering?

God grows our faith in different ways - one of these is to call us to sacrificial giving from time to
time. This Special Offering is an opportunity for us to grow in our faith and prepare for what
God wants to do through our church in 2018. Wesley used to us a Christmas Offering to
support the general budget. We are blessed that for the last few years, we have been able to
use a special offering at this time of year to position us to make a greater impact inour
community, in our church and around the world.

What is the difference between the regular offering and this Special Offering?

Our regular offering to Wesley is the proportional amount that we set apart on a systematic
basis and give throughout the year. We challenge members to grow their giving to the full tithe
of 10%. From time to time there are opportunities to give in a sacrificial way. This Special
Offering is one of those sacrificial occasions that stretch us to grow in our faith, and should be
over and above what you regularly give.

How much should I give?

Since the goal is $21,000 (an increase of $6,000 over last year’s goal), this LOVE BUILDS UP
will involve everyone. Please prayerfully consider a sacrificial gift. The precise amount you give
is between you and God. Many in our church can give a $500 or even a $5,000 gift. Others will
be able to give between $20 and $200. The issue is not equal giving, but equal sacrifice. What
amount can you give that will stretch your faith?

When should I give?

The best time to give will be the first Sunday after you receive this information. Pleas pray
about making your best gift on that day. However you can continue to give until January 31,
2018. We do this for those who want to contribute from Christmas gifts or end of year bonuses.
Please check the LOVE BUILDS UP area on the offering envelope or include a note designating
that your gift is for this Special Offering.

Why is the goal so large?

Wesley is a church that dares to dream big dreams for God. Big dreams require big faith and
big funding. Last year, we set a goal of $15,000. This was about double our normal weekly
offerings and three times more than we used to raise with our Christmas offering, but we
surpassed it dramatically and raised over $19,000. So we’re stepping out in holy boldness and
setting a goal of about three times our average weekly giving.

Can I give online, with a check, or with cash?

Yes. to all. If you give online using the secure giving portal through our website, look for the LOVE BUILDS UP Special Offering option under the

various funds you can give to at Wesley. Likewise you can use your bank’s online payment option to send a check directly to the church office (1201 West Calhoun Street, Macomb, IL 61455). Just make sure to mark the memo area that your gift is for the LOVE BUILDS UP Special Offering.

Can I make in-kind gifts of stocks or bonds?

Of Course! Since Wesley United Methodist Church is a 501c3 organization, there can be
tremendous tax benefits for you by giving in-kind gifts. This is especially true for stocks that
have grown significantly in value since you purchased them. For information on this type of
giving, speak to your tax investment or tax professional, or call 309.833.2153 and speak with

Are my gifts tax deductible?

All gifts to Wesley, whether via the regular offering or this Special Offering, are completely tax-
deductible, as long as they are identifiable to you. Your gift will be deductible in the tax year
given (i.e., gifts given in 2018 will be deductible on your 2018 taxes). You will receive periodic
giving statements including a year-end statement for tax purposes.
