Wesley's "Year-End" Offering

Wesley's "Year-End" Offering

light nations bannerNow through January 31, 2019 - $15,500 goal
“I will make you a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.” Isaiah 49:6

Dear Wesley Family,

I am excited to share information with you regarding LIGHT TO THE NATIONS: WESLEY’S
“END OF YEAR” SPECIAL OFFERING that begins now and continues through January, 2019.

From the beginning, Wesley has been devoted to serving our neighbors near and far. During
the last few years we have sent mission teams overseas - Costa Rica, Cuba, India and across the
USA. And we have seen the world coming to us. As WIU has experienced a surge in international
students, many have made Wesley a church home. Wesley’s mission mindedness extends to
people who may not be physically distant from us, but who’s life experience may be quite different.

Now, through our LIGHT TO THE NATIONS offering, we have the opportunity to make an
even greater impact. Here is how your gifts will be a light to the nations.

  • Illuminate lives through The Salvation Army, Loaves and Fishes, Samaritan’s Well, and Habitat for Humanity.
  • Share the light of Christ with at risk children through the “Our Conference, Our Kids” campaign to endow the spiritual life programs at United Methodist related agencies serving children, including The Baby Fold, Chaddock, Cunningham Children’s Home, Leslie Bates Davis Neighborhood House, and Spero Family Services (formerly the United Methodist Children’s Home).
  • Be a light to the nations through United Methodist Africa University.
  • Create a fund for the WIU Wesley Foundation to meet emergency needs of International Students.
  • Partner with a local Macomb #185 school
  • Other mission and ministry needs as your generosity makes possible.

Use the special LIGHT TO THE NATIONS envelope for the offering, or make a gift online through the website.

Making a difference together,
Howard White, Senior Minister

Special Offering Overview

Community Ministries

No one agency or ministry can respond to every need in a community. We are fortunate to have a  network of groups working to meet the most basic challenges confronting some of our neighbors in Macomb and McDonough County. By giving to LIGHT TO THE NATIONS, you’ll be making it possible for Wesley to generously support The Salvation Army, Samaritan’s Well, Loaves and Fishes, and Habitat for Humanity.

Our Conference, Our Kids

The five child welfare agencies within the Illinois Great Rivers Conference of the United Methodist
Church provide for the whole child, and the whole family - body, soul, mind and spirit. While their
basic needs for safety, food and shelter are provided, this work with children is not complete if we do
not offer healing through Christ. “Our Conference Our Kids” is a campaign to endow the spiritual life
programs at 5 United Methodist agencies located in Central and Southern Illinois, including The
Baby Fold (Normal), Chaddock (Quincy), Cunningham Children’s Home (Urbana), Leslie Bates
Davis Neighborhood House (East St. Louis), and Spero Family Services (formerly the United
Methodist Children’s Home in Mt. Vernon). When we offer pastoral care to children and families we
shine a light into their darkness. The world tells these kids they don’t have a prayer, but we will make
sure they do.

Macomb District #185 School

Wesley has partnered with local schools in a variety of ways over the years, including this year with
Thanksgiving dinners. We will work with teachers and administrators at one of our local schools to
find a specific way to improve the education environment. The project would depend to a large
degree on the size of the offering.

Africa University

A United Methodist University serving the continent of Africa was the vision of Bishop Joseph
Hartzell, Missionary Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church to Africa. Hartzell was born and
raised in Moline and educated in Bloomington and Evanston. Many decades later, Africa
University was established in the very spot he dreamed it would be in Zimbabwe in 1992. Wesley
UMC and the Fellheimer Trust have been significant partners with AU from the beginning, along
with other congregations of the Illinois Great Rivers Conference. Our ties deepened this year
with the addition of an AU graduate to our pastoral staff, Rev. Melly Momo. Pastor Melly is also a
member of the Africa University Partnership Committee of our Conference.

WIU Wesley Foundation

In order to come to the United States to study, international students must prove they can cover their expenses. Once in a while, however, an emergency situation comes up which, by definition, the students did not anticipate. Sometimes this is the difference between completing their studies or not.
Emergencies can include a dental problem, issues with housing, death of a parent, etc. Like Wesley Church, the Wesley Foundation is the spiritual home for many International Students. A designated fund available to Pastor Mark Hendrickson will make a big difference.

Why a Special Offering?

God grows our faith in different ways - one of these is to call us to sacrificial giving from time to
time. This Special Offering is an opportunity for us to grow in our faith and prepare for what
God wants to do through our church in 2019. Wesley used to us a Christmas Offering to
support the general budget. We are blessed that for the last few years, we have been able to
use a special offering at this time of year to position us to make a greater impact inour
community, in our church and around the world.

What is the difference between the regular offering and this Special Offering?

Our regular offering to Wesley is the proportional amount that we set apart on a systematic
basis and give throughout the year. We challenge members to grow their giving to the full tithe
of 10%. From time to time there are opportunities to give in a sacrificial way. This Special
Offering is one of those sacrificial occasions that stretch us to grow in our faith, and should be
over and above what you regularly give.

How much should I give?

Since the goal is $15,500, this LIGHT TO THE NATIONS will involve everyone. Please prayerfully consider a sacrificial gift. The precise amount you give is between you and God. Many in our church can give a $500 or even a $5,000 gift. Others will be able to give between $20 and $200. The issue is not equal giving, but equal sacrifice. What amount can you give that will stretch your faith?

When should I give?

The best time to give will be the first Sunday after you receive this information. Pleas pray
about making your best gift on that day. However you can continue to give until January 31,
2019. We do this for those who want to contribute from Christmas gifts or end of year bonuses.
Please check the LOVE BUILDS UP area on the offering envelope or include a note designating
that your gift is for this Special Offering.

Why is the goal so large?

Wesley is a church that dares to dream big dreams for God. Big dreams require big faith and bigfunding. So we’re stepping out in holy boldness and setting a goal of more than twice our average weekly giving and 3 times what we used to receive in our “Christmas Offerings.

Can I give online, with a check, or with cash?

Yes. to all. If you give online using the secure giving portal through our website, look for the LIGHT TO THE NATIONS Special Offering option under the various funds you can give to at Wesley. Likewise you can use your bank’s online payment option to send a check directly to the church office (1201 West Calhoun Street, Macomb, IL 61455). Just make sure to mark the memo area that your gift is for the LOVE BUILDS UP Special Offering.

Can I make in-kind gifts of stocks or bonds?

Of Course! Since Wesley United Methodist Church is a 501c3 organization, there can be
tremendous tax benefits for you by giving in-kind gifts. This is especially true for stocks that
have grown significantly in value since you purchased them. For information on this type of
giving, speak to your tax investment or tax professional, or call 309.833.2153 and speak with
Belinda or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Are my gifts tax deductible?

All gifts to Wesley, whether via the regular offering or this Special Offering, are completely tax-
deductible, as long as they are identifiable to you. Your gift will be deductible in the tax year
given (i.e., gifts given in 2019 will be deductible on your 2019 taxes). You will receive periodic
giving statements including a year-end statement for tax purposes.
