A Note From Pastor Howard

This is Pastor Howard, and I'm writing to share an announcement made at worship at Macomb Wesley. Bishop Frank Beard has a new appointment for me, beginning July 1st. I am to serve as Senior Pastor of First United Methodist Church in Carbondale, Illinois. I am, of course, still processing the mixed emotions about this move, but we have learned to trust the process. This decision was driven by the discernment that I am the best suited clergy person for the needs of the congregation in Carbondale and that an excellent pastor is available to follow me in Macomb.

Ironically, Leah and I were pretty sure we would not be moved this year, and had begun some redecorating at home and reorganizing my office. But we've been together for 8 years, and the reality is that only one pastor in Wesley’s long history has stayed longer, so we have had a good run together.

First UMC is a congregation with strong leadership, a distinguished history, a great music program and have been led by some outstanding pastors including Alan Rhein who recently announced his plans to retire. There is a beautiful home for us to live in and an excellent High School for our kids who will be a Freshman and Junior next year. You may recall that Rev. Rhee was appointed to the other United Methodist Church in Carbondale last year, so we will be able to reconnect with a family who were our neighbors and friends for 7 years.

We have ample time to prepare for the changes ahead, which will naturally include a new pastoral appointment to Wesley. United Methodism has a process in place to make such transitions go smoothly, and it is in good hands. I also want to assure you that even as we prepare to receive new pastoral leadership, we will still be working on several important projects.

In the midst of chaos and change, one thing remains the same: Jesus Christ. He is the same yesterday, today and forever.
