Youth Group Mission Trip to Denver

Youth Group Mission Trip to Denver '14 and '15

2014: The Wesley and Savoy United Methodist Church Youth Groups went on the mission trip to Denver, CO June 14-21, 2014.  We stayed at the Littleton United Methodist Church.

2015: The Wesley, Savoy, and Pekin United Methodist Church Youth Groups will go on the mission trip to Denver, CO July 18-25, 2015. We will be staying the Colorado Christian University (information below).

This is a unique opportunity to do ministry in an urban area.

In 2014 we served four (4) ministries.  Below is some information about these ministries.

In 2015 we are adding a fifth ministry. We will be working at the Ponderosa Church Camp in Larkspur, Colorado, south of Denver

Project C.U.R.E.

Project C.U.R.E. is the largest provider of donated medical supplies and equipment to developing countries around the world.  We will be working in a warehouse organizing and boxing up donated medical supplies and equipment to be put in a (large) shipping container.  Shipping containers are then sent to California an put on ships and taken to developing countries around the world.

Project C.U.R.E. (Commission on Urgent Relief and Equipment) was founded in 1987.

Denver Inner City Parish

We will be working at a Day Camp with children ages 5-12.   We will be helping the staff with activities and leading a couple of our own activities.  There will be outings (such as hiking and swimming) and indoor and outdoor activities. This year (2015) we plan to make balloon animals (and water and trees) and act out the Creation Story, from Genesis, on Wednesday afternoon, with the children.

In 2014 will built Noah's Arc (and a rainbow) on Monday morning and acted out the story of Noah's Arc. On Thursday afternoon we will be doing a skit and singing songs involving the children.  The skit (which needs to be designed/created) will center on God the creator and the verse Isaiah 64:8 Yet you, Lord, are our Father.  We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.

The Denver Inner City Parish (DICP/The Parish) was established (by a group of Protestant churches) in 1960 to assist Denver’s working-poor families in breaking the vicious cycle of poverty prevalent within their communities.  They have multiple ministries around Denver. More info at http://dicp.org/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DenverInnerCityParish

In addition, on Wednesday evening we (our entire group) will be joining the DICP for a community worship service and meal.

UMCOR Flood Relief

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is supporting local church relief and recovery efforts in Colorado after severe flooding (which occured in 2013).  The flooding, in the Big Thompson, and other, canyons, as impacted an area the size of the state of Connecticut.  We will be doing a variety of jobs (to be determined).  Possibilities include debris clean-up, removal of damaged building materials, and repairing houses.

JeffCo Action Center

The Action Center’s mission is to provide an immediate response to basic human needs and promote pathways to self-sufficiency for Jefferson County residents and the homeless.  At the Action Center we will do a variety of task.  They have food distribution and clothing distribution programs.  We may be loading, unloading, organizing, distributing food and clothing.  Denver is a very large city and the Action Center serves 100's of people.

The Action Center (originally called Jeffco Support Inc.) was started by the Jefferson County Human Relations Council in 1968 at Applewood Valley United Methodist Church as an information and referral service. Intervention services were added in 1969.  They have multiple ministries.

More information can be found at http://theactioncenterco.org/.  History/About.

We pray that God will direct us on our mission trip and help us to serve these ministries and the people of Denver, grow closer to God and each other, and have fun.

Ponderosa Church Camp

The new  ministry that we are adding in 2015 is the Ponderosa Church Camp in Larkspur, Colorado. We will be doing concrete work, construction, and working on the grounds at the camp.

CCU Colorado Christian University

In 2015 we will be staying at the Colorado Christian University in Lakewood, CO (west suburb of Denver). We will be staying in dormitory rooms, which are like small apartments with a mini-kitchen and bathroom (lots of showers!).  CCU has been very accommodating to our needs. Our space for worship and activities should be very good.  www.ccu.edu
