Loaves and Fishes

Updates 1-1-2018

  • Wesley is responsible for stocking shelves in October and  January. Please contact Bonnie Barker or Dana Walker if you can help stock shelves.
  • Frank and Sandy Kessler sponsored a very successful (over $3000) silent auction fundraiser party for the pantry. Thank you to everyone who donated and bid.
  • Trinity Lutheran Church of Macomb is joining the pantry to make a total of 12 churches!
  • The junior and senior high Youth Group leaf raking project, with assistance from W.I.U’s women’s athletics, raised $1590 for the pantry. Thanks to everyone who contributed!
  • The 25th anniversary of Loaves and Fishes will be in October 2018.

Wesley Church is one of 12 churches that supports Loaves and Fishes, which provides food and emergency assistance to people in need. Depending on funding, services may include overnight lodging, medical transportation expenses, personal-care needs, and financial assistance for paying medical, pharmaceutical, rent and utility bills.

Volunteers are needed year round (to do things such as stock shelves and help clients). During the month of January Wesley Church has primary responsibility at Loaves and Fishes, so more volunteers are needed during these months.  Training is available for people who would like to help.

Contact Dana Walker, Bonnie Barker, or the Church office if you have questions.

Mission trips

The Missions Team coordinates yearly mission trips. We usually have an adult and youth group go out of the country (e.g., to Costa Rica), a youth and adult group do a mission trip in the US (e.g., Virginia, Denver, CO), and the Wesley Foundation take a mission trip (e.g., to Cuba). Please visit our Mission Trips page to learn more.

Streaming Waters Work Week (SWWW)

Each summer, dozens of church members and friends set aside one week to help people in our community. Jobs have included yard work, repairing gutters, building ramps, painting, fixing decks, and repairing fences. A meal crew provides lunches, snacks and plenty of water. The church donates the labor and materials. Click here for more information.

Christian Caring Ministry

Short-term help is provided to those in need. This may include a phone call, sending a card, providing a meal or making a visit.

Sweet Corn Project

Each year, the Missions Team has a Corn For Compassion Sale.  Sweet corn grown on two acres of farmland owned by the church is sold by the “Methodist dozen” – 13 ears!  Proceeds, which average $2,500, are disbursed by the team for missions.  Click here for more information.

Wesley Church Partners with Habitat for Humanity

The Mission Team has partnered with Habitat for Humanity to upgrade an abandoned house to make it usable, so that Habitat for Humanity can make it available to a needy family. Members of Wesley are helping with the work and repairs at the home. WGEM News Report.
